As a Brisbane-founded brand, FRANKiE4 Footwear is passionate about supporting local and upcoming designers, and as part of this initiative each October FRANKiE4 partners with Brisbane Fashion Month.  We sat down with Laura Churchill, Brisbane based stylist, fashion media guru and Director of Brisbane Fashion Month, an annual festival held every year that celebrates Queensland fashion. Here, we talk with Laura about why Queensland brands, like FRANKiE4, are finding global success when it comes to lifestyle design.

You’ve just closed another very successful year of Brisbane Fashion Month. What were some of the biggest highlights for you this year?

It was an incredible year for Brisbane Fashion Month. We have such a strong following now and it’s so gratifying to see people really connecting with the brand and what we’re all about. Highlights this year were our annual Business Workshop event which features guest speakers on various topics to do with the business of fashion and is a great networking event, our new partnerships including with Treasury Brisbane where we held a beautiful high tea runway event, and with Disney, who we worked with to stage a runway show inspired by the new film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

What are some of the emerging trends you noticed on the runway this year from Brisbane designers?

I find Brisbane designers are led more by lifestyle than by trends so we focus our runways around that and offer opportunities for everyone to showcase alongside like-minded labels. We staged our first sustainable fashion show this year, and continued our Resort Finale event which is designed to encapsulate everything we do best in Queensland – from activewear and sleepwear through to incredible swim and resort options. I love having the opportunity to show what we can do in Brisbane and what incredible talent there is out there.

"The eyes of the world look to Queensland for resort-wear - we know the lifestyle so well and have a reputation for quality so our designers find a lot of success globally in this market."

You chose to pair a few runway designs with FRANKiE4 shoes this year.
Can you tell us why you selected these styles and paired them with the outfits?

Our models love wearing FRANKiE4! I chose the LiSA heels, the NADiA espadrille and classic white sneakers such as POLLY and LUCY. I personally don’t think a shoe wardrobe needs too much more than a great pair of neutral heels and a clean white leather sneaker. I then had the confidence that those styles would cover the bases for any look we needed to style for the runway, particularly the Resort Finale show which was very much about what we want to wear every day here in Queensland.

What do you love most about the Brisbane fashion community?

I love the depth of experience we have here and the fact our audience really does embrace local business and want to support those who are doing great things in fashion locally. We have everything here from people doing incredible things with high tech recycled materials, to couture embroidery the likes of which only very few people outside Paris have the skills to do.

Are Brisbane fashion designers bringing anything unique to the world of fashion compared to Melbourne or Sydney designers?

The eyes of the world look to Queensland for resort-wear. We know the lifestyle so well and have a reputation for quality so our designers find a lot of success globally in this market. I think Brisbane designers feel more free to design for their customer and not be so tied in to trends also. We have the freedom to do things our way in Brisbane.

What do you love most about the FRANKiE4 design?
I wear a lot of FRANKiE4 shoes and I do find them really comfortable but I also love the innovation in the styles and I love supporting a local brand.

It’s no longer enough for fashion brands to offer just beautiful product, nowadays consumers are expecting a lot more from their purchases in terms of quality, fit and feel. Why do you think this is happening?

There’s always been a market for quality but I think what’s driving this growing trend is that people want to invest their money wisely in their wardrobe and they want their garments to last, either for value for money or for sustainability. A beautifully made garment or accessory is always going to make you feel great as opposed to something that doesn’t fit or flatter, so my advice is always to buy the best quality you can afford.
